Lionel Messi, the talismanic forward for Argentina and FC Barcelona, received the FIFA Best Award for the Best Player of the Year yesterday night. In a star-studded event held in Milan, Lionel Messi became the first man to win the coveted prize six times, beating Livepool FC’s Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese forward playing or Juventus FC.
Messi’s victory rings little surprise. While many believed that Van Dijk, who won the European Best Player award last month, would come out on top again, Messi has been rather dominant in front of goal last season as well.
The Argentine maestro was the highest goal scorer on the continent for last season, notching up 36 goals. He also won the Spanish La Liga with his club, where he had the highest number of goals and assists. While his side finished the Champions League at the semi-final stage, nothing takes away from his masterful season at all.
“I want to thank everyone who voted for me, the individual prizes are a minor thing for me, the important thing is the collective, but it’s a special moment for me to be here with my wife and two of my three children, “said Messi, as he accepted his award.
Van Dijk was placed second, while Ronaldo took third place. The three men are expected to battle it out for the Ballon d’Or award on December 2nd as well.
