Virgil Van Dijk, the Liverpool F.C. defender, has been named the best player in Europe for the 2018/19 season. The Dutch international was presented with the honor at an award ceremony in Monaco last week, beating Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the award.
For the award, players in Europe, irrespective of their nationality, were judged based on their performances. These performances spanned their domestic leagues and international competitions, for clubs and countries.
A jury comprised of 80 club coaches and 55 journalists was also convened. Jury embers picked their top 3 players; the first got 5 points, the second got 3 points, and the third got a single point.
Out of 10 players selected for the award, the Dutch Van Dijk emerged the winner.
In addition to winning the award for the best player, Van Dijk was also crowned defender of the year. Other winners include Brazilian Allison Becker, Van Dijk’s Liverpool teammate, who won the goalkeeper of the year award. Barcelona and Dutch central midfielder Frenkie De Jong picked up the midfielder of the year award, and Lionel Messi, the Argentine and Barcelona striker, took home the award for forward of the year.
