Three young players of Nigeria descent have made the 60 man’s shortlist for the yearly Golden boy award. The three young players are Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Red Bull Salzburg’s Karim Adeyemi and Bayern Munich’s Joshua Zirkzee.
The Golden Boy Award is a prestigious sport award presented by Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport. The award is given to a perceived outstanding young footballer during a calender year, prominent footballers that have won the Golden Boy Award include: Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Cesc Fabregas, Kun Sergio Aguero, Paul Pogba, Raheem Sterling, Kylian Mbappe and the current holder Athletico Madrid’s wonder boy, Joao Felix.
The list of nominees has now been reduced from the initial 100 nominations in June to 60 in August just as the competition heats up. Nigerian Chelsea sensation Faustino Anjorin did not make the cut having made the initial 100 man list, the three remaining nominees of Nigerian descent had a wonderful 2019/2020 football season at their respective clubs.
Bukayo Saka having 38 appearance in Arsenal’s first team, Adeyemi was involved in 12 matches for Australian champions Red Bull Salzburg and Zirkzee played 12 matches for Bayern.
Other prominent young footballers that made the 60 man list include Borussia Dortmund duo Jadon Sancho 20 and Erling Haaland 19, Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood, Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi, Bayern Munich’s left back Alphonso Davies and Barcelona’s Ansu Fati.
